Mataram was an excellent, central, starting point if you're planning to tour around Lombok on rental scooters or motorcycles. It's a central point with plenty of food choices and price points, a big mall, nice hotels and small home-stays, alike. You can ride north to the Lombok Wildlife park (about one hour,) south to the beaches around Kuta Lombok (a bit over an hour,) or anywhere you want to explore on the island, and still make it back at night for a good sleep before the next day's adventure begins.

There are few interesting Hindu temples to see. Both shopping malls were very good in the Center there was Starbuck even. In the second shopping mall there was a truly excellent restaurant, on the ground floor, Bilabong. Highly recommended! All in all would not recommend mor ethan 2 days stay there are many nicer places in Lombok.

Great place to stay but it is some distance from the rest of Lombok. A short stroll from the villa is some great food stores serving traditional indonesian food (mostly fish) and all the food is fresh and cheap, however if you would like a drink with your meal no alcohol. Everything else from the villa is a taxi ride away which your hosts will organise for you.

I like the food. I am not a fan of spicy food but I appreciate the spiciness of the food because it has fusion of organic taste and I could taste the culture of the island. The people are friendly and willing to point the direction if you go around the city.
