FAQs about hotels in Funchal

Portuguese Charm and Island Capital

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.

Founded in 1424, its position allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbour, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.

With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos of Madeira. Accommodation located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, is also available for those wanting to avoid the rush.

Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.

Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guest house, Booking.com offers a wide range of Funchal accommodation.

    3-4 days is plenty.

3-4 days is plenty. There are surprisingly beautiful gardens & green spaces giving a break from all the noise & congestion. Beautiful flowers & trees blooming everywhere during the May Flower Festival. When multiple cruise ships are in port at once, it is packed. Driving & parking is a nightmare. Summer season must be a crowded mess. Some beautiful vistas, but few places to pull over & enjoy them. Very high fog shrouded mountains. The tourist board proclaims that Madeira in general is the Hawaii of the Atlantic. Lots of Banana trees, some palms, some similar flowers, yes. The hiking is in the cold wet fog & the beaches can't compare.

A lovely place to visit for its scenery, cityscape, flora and food. Visits to the many gardens were so colourful, especially Monte via the cable car. Easy walking around the city with lots of shops and restaurants. The Flower Festival was colourful with parades, folk art and music, classic car parade and lots more to see. Several interesting art galleries and museums to visit as well.

The island offers tremendous variety that takes time to discover. 2 weeks would go by very quickly here. Renting a car almost essential as it allows you to visit sites away from. the organised bus trips, which would be good if you don't fancy driving and the inevitable route finding issues.

Madeira is a lovely island with many spectacular hikes and breathtaking views, but the city of Funchal was the least satisfying aspect of our visit. Driving in and out of the city, to and from our hotel, was stressful and confusing: roads are narrow and wind around blind curves, the locals drive very fast, and because parking is seemingly a free-for-all you spend a lot of time dodging parked cars and making room for other cars to go past you. The downtown businesses and restaurants have surrendered entirely to the crowds of tourists from the daily cruise ships, which dock in the middle of the central harbor. As a result, the staff at shops and eateries are thoroughly tired and unenthusiastic about their jobs. We plan to return to Madeira, but we will definitely pick another town to stay in.

Madeira is a wonderful location to visit.

Madeira is a wonderful location to visit. It feels incredibly safe and relaxed. We traveled in the Spring and it was a bit too cool to swim. I would absolutely return in the Summer. We had 2 nights but really 3-5 nights would have been better. Our return flight got cancelled due to winds, which happens frequently, so plan accordingly by getting the insurance or make sure to have a buffer if you have a connecting flight from a different airline.

We have visited Funchal previously and have found different activities and places to visit during each holiday, The restaurants located in Santa Maria area have a choice of menus at competitive prices. The cable car from Funchal to Monte is an experience not to be missed, along with a toboggan ride. The tuk-tuk tours are also worth a couple of hours of your time to visit several areas beyond the centre and into local village areas. We also visited the Valley of the Nuns during our recent holiday, and enjoyed lunch in a local restaurant. The bus journey from Funchal took less than an hour, with return tickets costing less than 7 euros for 2 adults. Our recent holiday was during the annual Flower Festival and parade which is an experience I would recommend

We missed our connection flight and arrived to the hotel in the middle of the night. Despite the time, Nuno welcomed us with a smile and very patient explanations and made the start of our trip in Madeira very pleasant. Also the rest of the staff was very nice, attentive and helpful. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. The hotel's garden is gorgeous and has a nice panoramic view of the sea and was the perfect place for breakfast. Breakfast was excellent with large variety. Prime location in Funchal from where you can walk around old town and to the sea front. The free gated parking is a massive bonus. Balcony with view to the square where you can find many options for breakfast. The area is nearby many restaurants as well. The flat in itself is big and comfy. Not having to share a key is great and everyone can come in and out as they please with a code. Kitchen had everything we needed, very well equipped. If I go back to Madeira will be staying here again.

Staff were friendly, helpful and polite. The breakfast was okay, not great. Poor selection of fruit, coffee machines always dirty. I then managed to get into a different type of breakfast to keep going during my time there, given that I had 14 days to stay in Madeira. If you decide to have breakfast outside, you need to look out for pigeons as they constantly come to your table and try to steal your food! The view from the restaurant is mostly to the pool, not a sea view. But still okay.

Superb hotel. We had a lovely spacious, sea view room. Comfortable beds and quiet at night. Breakfast was good with lots of options. Staff very friendly and warm. We rented a car and were able to park for free on site (be careful there are limited spaces). Pools and garden were very pleasant to enjoy time relaxing if not out exploring Madeira. Bus stop just outside to get you into central Funchal - a forty minute walk otherwise, or for the aerobús to the airport.

The hotel is just a short walk away from the old town and most of Funchal's main attractions, and it's suitably located even for those who don't like elevation. The rooms and public areas are clean and very well maintained, the furnishing is nice and modern. The rooftop pool area has a fantastic view over the city and the sea. For breakfast, there is a wide variety of treats available in a smorgasbord system. The staff was very helpful throughout our stay.

For my first trip to Madeira, this was a really good pick. The hotel is cosy, the staff are friendly and the room was a great size. I was given 2 single beds when I would’ve preferred a double bed but apart from that I really enjoyed the stay. The breakfast was freshly made in the morning and tasted great each day. I booked a massage for my last day and was worth it. I will recommend it to anyone going to Funchal.

Location, location, location - tough it would be hard to find a place to park a car. It is close to the old town, close to SAM bus terminal with buses to the airport. For the price it was a reasonable option for our last night in Funchal and Madeira. We also had an excellent night sleep - it was on a weekend tough, so no noises from a nearby school.

Wonderful time at Quinta B, very great welcome, the bedroom is perfect and the view with the breakfast amazing! I recommend this hotel for few days in Funchal, you will love it. The localization is near to the old town which is great for the visits.
