From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

We stayed on the outskirts of Plymouth where there are some great little villages and stunning vistas. Whilst there we visited the Woodlands adventure park which was a great value day out for a young family.

Plymouth is a lively and interesting city in a spectacular coastal location. The view from the Hoe looking out over the harbors to the neighboring sea is breathtaking. We stayed in the Barbican area right on the water above the Mayflower Steps at the Admiral McBride pub. The National Aquarium and Mayflower Museum are only steps away plus numerous restaurants, bistros, pubs, and shops. Plus it’s the home of Sir Francis Drake. The Town Centre was an easy walk uphill. Several car hires are within easy walking distance as well if you plan to visit neighboring Cornwall.

The main entrance has two short flights of stairs up to reception and no lift in that part of the building. Difficult for people with heavy luggage etc and the back entrance is confusing for new visitors (ok once you get a feel for the place). A couple of days in Plymouth itself is probably enough but the hotel is conveniently close to both the train station and bus depot making it easy to do day trips to Exeter, Penzance, Torquay, Totnes etc

Very little parking in the centre. Plymouth is quite hilly for those with limited mobility. The little Barbican Theatre is great. Centre can get a bit lairy after Plymouth Argyle have played at home.

Plymouth Hoe is a wonderful place to walk plenty of history.to indulge in. The barbican is a short walk from the Hoe where you will find restaurants and pubs. I would avoid the city centre until after the improvements are finished.
I received a warm welcome at this family-run hotel in a superb location just minutes away from Plymouth Hoe. My room was very clean and comfortable. There is a wide breakfast choice served by a friendly and efficient waitress in a light and airy room- no windowless basement breakfast room here as I have encountered elsewhere! I will be making several trips to Plymouth and it took me a while to find the right place to stay. I am happy to have finally found the Invicta as it meets all my needs.
We stayed in the Windsor room, which was more like a small flat with separate lounge/kitchenette which was all very well appointed. The bed was especially comfortable. All of the staff that we met were friendly. Breakfast was very nice as well, a good selection of hot and cold meals. The hotel was in a perfect location, practically on the doorstep of Plymouth Hoe, the city centre, the Barbican, harbour and the coast line.
I stayed in Ocean Stays for almost 3 months due to work assigment at Derriford Hospital. Barrie, the hotel manager, admin team and housekeepers all have been very accomodating to my needs. The room was very confortable and spacious.
Plymouth Hoe and Barbican are 5 min walk from the accomodation which was nice for occasional walk and a meal out.
The building was nice and quiet and overal was very enjoyable stay.
I loved staying here. It was my first time in Plymouth (and the UK, in general), which is where my partner is from. I live in New York, so this was a big and exciting trip. The apartment felt like our own little place and it was so very nice. It was a little glimpse into what it could be like to live together and it was amazing. When I come back, we will be staying here again for sure. :)
Lovely old Victorian hotel, would recommend staying here if visiting Plymouth as it is in walking distance of the Historic dockyards, Plymouth Hoe and the City Centre. Parking is limited at the back of the hotel, but we managed to park there. There is a small charge to park, plenty of other parking on the side roads, Get the Ringo app which makes it easier to pay for parking in Plymouth
When we arrived we were greeted by some lovely staff! We checked in really quickly and were told we were guest of the day! Meaning we had complimentary breakfast in the morning and 2x free drinks! The location is amazing right outside the shopping centre and it’s so easy to get to other places in Plymouth. Really recommend this hotel!
Absolutely brilliant setting close to the best parts of Plymouth. Easy walking distance to everything.
Hotel was clean, comfortable and welcoming staff were able to answer any questions quickly.
We will be recommending a stay in Plymouth at The Drake to friends and family. I made a relaxing short break in a beautiful setting.
stayed here for Plymouth theatre trip. usually say in city centre but for sake of 15 minute drive this was much less fraught. This hotel is standard big hotel but very comfortable, clean and with excellent staff. Parking felt safe and plenty of it. Excellent buffet breakfast.
Really friendly staff, excellent cooked breakfast that really set me up for the day - believe me I have a big appetite.
Located right on top of Plymouth Hoe and a stones through from harbour area.
Plenty of free off road parking available at hotel.
Extremely good value.
Great, quirky looking hotel. Easy check in, good bar, great, all you can eat breakfast, room has unusual decor, really nice. Bed is very comfy. Shower is great in a double sized cubicle. Big TV with facility to plug in your own streaming devices
Fabulous locaiton with parking in the city centre of Plymouth - a real find! Very well equipped and extremely comfortable. Ideal for busisness trips, perfect for tourist visits (12m walk to the Hoe), and next to the university.
The property was very comfortable and an excellent space for my needs as I was visiting Plymouth. It was an easy walk to most places in town. It had all of the conveniences I needed. I would absolutely stay here again.
