To climb the vulcano in daytime no need for a guide.
To climb the vulcano in daytime no need for a guide. For the sunset if the sky is clear no guide needed. But if it is cloudy and night - get a guide.
Extremly loud city due to the crazy motobikers.

i thought Berastagi is a nice and cool place to rest after climbing down Mt Sibayak. you can enjoy some local foods at night along the main street, have some best coffees and ginger tea..if you're into chinese noodles..you may have it near the market..for those who like fresh milk from the barn, yoghurt, cheese or dairy products...go to Gundaling..about 20- 30 mins from Central Berastagi.

Definitely do the small trek to Gunung Sibayak.
Definitely do the small trek to Gunung Sibayak. It's totally worth it just for the natural scenery and the volcanic craters, and lucky you if you can catch the sunrise there, though it's usually foggy early in the morning. (You can do the trek without a guide, but you have to arrange your transport, which isn't much cheaper than the guide). Check out the hot springs as well, they're very nice and relaxing, and the surroundings are very pretty. Besides this, there's a nice Buddhist Temple, a Karo Church, a Ghost Town(near Gunung Sinabung) all within 30 minutes bike ride from the centre which are all worth a visit. Within the town, do check out the local markets, and you'll see a lot of fresh Indonesian produce you might not have ever heard of. The people are all super nice too, and they'll usually let you(or rather, insist that you) try some. Finally, if you're up for an hour long bike ride, do check out Sipiso-Piso waterfall, one of the tallest in Asia. The hike down is worth it. Though if you're planning to go to Lake Toba via private transport, you can stop there on your way.
PS: Stay at Smiley's Homestay. They're lovely people who'll make you feel right at home <3

Berastagi is perfect for a stop over between Ketambe/Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba. Actually the city is not very nice but people are friendly and the landscape around is impressive. There are two volcanos for trekking and hot springs

The visit to Mt Sibayak was the highlight.
The visit to Mt Sibayak was the highlight. The hot springs were also enjoyable. Berstagi was a hill station for the Dutch and a number of Dutch houses can be seen on the hills overlooking the town. It is not as architecturally rich as hill stations in India but still interesting. If I was going again I would an extra day and include a walk to Mt Sinabung,
Smiley: 1) On the way to Sibayak, he showed me the beauty of real jungle different from the man-made plantation forest in Bukit Lawang. 2) He let me know how to use public bus. So I went to Lake Toba and Medan by public bus. It was very cheap and really easy.
Cecelia 1) She really knew a lot about cooking and was very good at explaining it in English. 2) She was a good cook as well.
They were very kind and treated me like one of the family. I really want to see them again.
The best part about this place is the hospitality of Kassman and his wife. I was greeted with a smile and genuine kindness when I arrived and we’ll taken care of. I was able to join the volcano hike and hot springs visit and Kassman arrived at the hot springs to meet his guests with spring rolls made by his wife. At breakfast I had a delicious coffee and vegan pancake. I only stayed one night but this was a perfect stopover between Medan and Lake Toba.
The location is good. Right at the center of berastagi. There is an impressive garden at the ground door which feel like walking in a tropical forest. Every corner of the hotel is well decorated to detail and in a nature style. The room is clean. The double bed is super big even for two persons. I am surprised to find such a nice hotel in a small town like berastagi and at such a reasonable price.
Mary was very nice, she helped us with everything we needed. She even arranged our ride to Lake Toba. The homestay is comfy and has a good wifi. We had the private room with our own bathroom and it had hot water. We also did the sunrise Sibayak trek with Abdi (her husband). He was a wonderful and funny guide who explained us many facts about the volcano.
Amazing stay! They gave me so many recommendations as well as woke up early to send me off! They set up a sunrise hike and even made breakfast for us at 4 am. The room was great and there was a large locker with a lock provided. Overall 10/10. Made my time in Berastagi very memorable!!!
Really nice guesthouse with rooms facing the view. The huge terrace is so nice and there are many chairs to enjoy the view. Comfortable room. Anton is nice and gave me recommendations. I felt safe. Free water refills. I stayed 4 nights, I really liked Berastagi.
Very relaxed hotel and very friendly staff. I found it to be very handy for the town centre. Just a little walk to the market and restaurants. Also very handy for climbing the volcano as the bus stops right outside the entrance. I really liked it here.
Nice and clean rooms with hot shower (a big plus because evenings can get a bit chilly in Berastagi). Also the location was perfect - just a few minutes walk to local warung, Indomaret, atm etc. All in all a nice stay in Sapo Karo. Recommended!
The location is strategic, in front of 2 major hotels and resort. A lot of restaurants can be found within walking distance. The house is still well-maintained, not damp, probably because it gets a lot of morning sunshine. Bathrooms are clean.
Fantastic views of the area/volcanoes. In a quite side street away from the noisy main road of Berastagi. Although we arrived late (2am) the host kindly waited for us. There is a nice cafe/pizzeria attached to the accommodation.
This place is dirty and the owner did not make any efforts.
No hot water, dirty room, very difficult to find thé hôtel because the wrong adress is entered on Google Maps.
Quite peaceful, as a little away from the main part of Berastagin (be prepared to walk a little, or use transportation) and great staff who are very helpful and friendly.
Very recommended! Very near to berastagi town. The room was great! Towel and soap provided. No shampoo but its okay. Mattress was good. Also got heater! So greatttt.
Lovely garden to explore and play with kids after a long drive. Made us a box breakfast as we left at 4:30 to climb Sibayak. Comfortable rooms and beds.
