A City Fit to Prosper
Yogyakarta represents the Javanese quintessence, the guardian of the island’s traditions, language, culture and arts. Capital of kingdoms and empires since the 8th century, ‘Yogya’ is today the capital of the namesake Sultanate and Special Region of Indonesia.
With ancient origins, the city was during centuries the capital of the Mataram Kingdom, but its power was weakened when the Dutch East India Company started to gain control over the small Javanese kingdoms during the 17th century. After World War II, the Indonesian independence was supported by the Sultan, allowing the monarchy to stay in power. The city became the country’s first capital from 1945 to 1949.
Its name was inspired by the Indian Ramayana epic, with ‘Yogya’ meaning 'suitable, fit’ and ‘karta’ meaning 'prosperous'. Must-see sites include the Kraton Yogyakarta Palace, the Taman Sari Castle, the Alun-Alun Sultan's ground, and the Masjid Gede Kauman Mosque. Jalan Malioboro street is one of the most popular shopping areas, and many hotels in Yogyakarta are located nearby.
Its proximity to the famous temples of Borobudur and Prambanan makes this town one of the country’s most popular destinations. Hotels, resorts and homestay accommodation are also available near those areas.

Outside the city, visiting the Borobudur Temple and the Prambanan Temple was so interesting to see. But I found Yogyakarta itself very dirty, I was tired of people trying out scams on me and there wasn't much that I found of interest. I was very disappointed as I had heard years ago that it was a centre of art, dance and music. What was great was a Korean restaurant that I discovered. I ate there several times.Reilly - 10Scored 10

I have stayed in Yogyakarta many times and have visited most of the main tourist attractions. First time visitors may wish to visit Malioboro Street and take a 'dokar' ride (horse and carriage) or becak ride (tricycle rickshaw) to the Taman Sari (old Sultan's water palace and former bathing pools for his harem) and the Kraton (the seat of the reigning Sultan of Yogyakarta). In addition, a trip to the Prambanan temple and grounds, located on the north-eastern side of town, is impressive and, if time permits, a visit to the world famous Borobudur Buddhist Temple (a 2 hour drive north of the city) is well worth the trip. There are many other cultural treats in 'Yogya' and a complete variety of food offered in good restaurants or in local street stalls. Also, a trip to the lower slopes of Mount Merapi (active volcano) is possible by organised tour, or take a taxi to where the locals run Jeep tours around the middle slopes.BodskiAustralia - 10Scored 10

Do not come on holiday if you don't want to get stuck in traffic. Avoid touristy area, shop locally and there are more place to eat "gudeg" at wijilan street. Do not believe everything you see on social media as it is sometimes for show only. Explore nature, history and culture. More cultural than Jakarta and central for seeing the sights of Borobudur and Prambanan temples. For nightlife, it takes a little to find, but it is there, we found some around the junction of Jl Parangtritis and Prawirotaman. This area has several hotels and home stays.

Heavy downpour did not prevent us from exploring the postcard perfect sceneries. We braved the puddles as well as the heat of the sun and truly enjoyed the surreal panorama Yogyakarta has to offer. Both our tour-drivers, Hanif and Hibza, know the areas intimately, the quiet spots and experiences that aren’t discussed on any website. We spent WAY too much time in the car, which wouldn't be so bad, but the roads were extremely winding (nausea!) and rough. Our guide was amazing, but the day should be scheduled better to limit drive time. And, if you know it is hazy, do NOT send your clients up to "see" the volcano, which is completely hidden - do something else. Was nice to stay downtown and be able to walk to nice Western restaurants.

It was an amazing room. Furthermore the hotel itself is in an amazing location. This hotel is a new property and it is well built. It is located next to a major train station which for me as a big train enthusiast is very exciting. Breakfasts were also amazing with plenty choices of Indonesian, Western, and oriental menu. They also provided a coffee machine that provides you with a wide variety of coffee possibilities.

We loved being close to the Malioboro Mall.
