Centrally located town of the North Island worth an overnight stop for lots of sightseeing spots nearby and good eateries. We recommend Hobbiton to anyone, even if you are not a fan of the movie series. It is a very enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. Also do not miss the unique Blue Spring in Putaruru.
The township of Matamata has many drinking and eating options for all budgets and some really nice places are reasonably priced.

We visited specifically to visit Hobbiton, this was a perfect stay for this purpose. We had a great meal at The Redoubt, although if eating on a Wednesday evening it helps if you enjoy Country and Western music. Pretty much everything was in walking distance. The area is really well looked after

Great place to unwind and just chill.
Great place to unwind and just chill. Handy to Rotorua and Tauranga too. If you want somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities but with all the essentials, Matamara is the place to be.

We loved our stay at A Place In the Paddock.
We loved our stay at A Place In the Paddock. It was just what it says. A beautifully appointed 3 bedroom house with room for family and friends right in the middle of a working dairy farm. We all enjoyed our stay. We visited the nearby Okoroire Hot Springs in Tirau close by. The are beautiful natural thermal pools in the bush. A must do.
As a frequent Hobbiton movie set goers and so having stayed in lots of places around Matamata , I can assure you - it’s probably the best we ever stayed at . Close to both the town and the Hobbiton. Cute, clean, stylish. I loved the comfortable bed ! What can be better than to lie down and seeing stars and the moon in the windows :) I wish we could stayed for another couple of days ! We would be happy to stay again if it’s available for our next Hobbiton visit ! Thank you Kelly ! Marry Xmas to you and your family !
Gerda & Twan’s place is amazing! we felt so comfortable there. It was immaculately clean and had everything we needed. The breakfast was wonderful! It is such a peaceful setting…waking up and seeing adorable goats grazing outside your window is just so special. And we were so happy we got to meet the sweet cats! We would absolutely stay here again if we are ever back in New Zealand and will recommend it to our friends and family. Thank you Gerda & Twan!!!
On the first day, landlord showed us the whole house and recommended us an Italian restaurant called Osteria in Matamata. Although the house was built in 1904, the interior decoration was very delicate. Each room has ensuite. They are perfectly clean. The internal sound insulation is very good and quiet. In general it is like a five-star hotel. The breakfast is really delicate and all homemade. I highly recommend Villa Walton👍👍👍
Absolutely beautiful property. Everything from the decor to the comfortable bed to the great shower made it a perfect stay. And the breakfast was delicious. Walnut Lodge is a labour of love for its owners Mike and Mia and you can see how much pride and effort they put into their property. Would recommend it to anybody looking to stay in the Matamata area. It was outstanding.
good accommodation, described exactly as it is, easy to find, good proximity to matamata cbd and hobbiton, has laundry facilities on site, good partnership with local businesses that gave us good deals with meals (Osteria restaurant was amazing), very accommodating host
Lovely and spacious stay with comfy beds, a nice shower, and room to stretch out. Great central location in Matamata. Arrival instructions were very clear and self check in was easy. Wonderful value, makes me wish we'd had time to stay there longer!
I throughly enjoyed my stay here. Great hosts, it was nice and warn and very cozy. Very clean and tidy. Breakfast with the host the next morning was amazing. I highly recommend this place to stay if you need somewhere in Matamata. 😊
We LOVED everything about Matamata Lodge! Mark and Glenn’s attention to detail in every part of our stay was phenomenal. The lodging was perfectly appointed, the food was excellent and delicious, the environment was spectacular!
Everything. The friendliness of our host, the beauty of the garden, the goats' antics, the beautiful poplar trees, the stream near by.... the accommodation was really good... everything you needed was there. Thank you.
Hosts gave us Manuka honey and lemon tea as I was very ill with a bad cold. So homely compared to a hotel! Two types of luxury pillows and awesome beds. House cosy in Winter with country views.
The room was clean and comfortable with all the facilities we needed. The bed was comfortable with good linen. The motel was very convenient for everything in Matamata but not at all noisy.
We arrived early but this wasn't an issue for the owners, thanks. Everyone was helpful when needed, whilst respecting our privacy. Good quiet location near to Matamata.
Excellent hosts, spacious and comfortable rooms in a prime location. Close to town, restaurants and attractions.
It's the only place we would ever stay in Matamata!
A place in the Paddock is a lovely space on a farm just outside of Matamata- there is a small museum on property- the space is clean, quiet and just lovely!
