The Chine is worth a visit!
The Chine is worth a visit! The ticket gives unlimited access for seven days. We took advantage of this and visited on three occasisons from top to bottom, and then in reverse! We were there mid may, and the Chine closed at 9pm, so it was too light for the illuminations to be seen at their best. But it was still a pleasant walk. Public transport is excellent from Shanklin and all the drivers we encountered were very friendly and helpful! We only had time for a brief exploration of the coastal paths, but the views are stunning!

It depends on what you like.
It depends on what you like. For me it is a typical Victorian seaside town, and the types of facilities on the seafront reflect this. Certainly it has much of what a family is looking for regarding entertainment, although some of the hotels did appear a bit run down. From a walking viewpoint it is lovely, although less mobile visitors may find some of the inclines a bit challenging!

A steep walk down to the Promenade which is clean and flat.
A steep walk down to the Promenade which is clean and flat. There is a good clean beach and amusements for children. Lift up and down to the promenade during the day . The old part of the town was worth a visit. Good place to eat with home cooked food and owned by the same family for over 30 years was The village Inn. Town centre a bit run down and typical of seaside town. Lots of pensioners on coach party holidays. Thorougly enjoyed Osborne House , weather permitting you could spend the day there. Due to the cost of the car ferry we will probably not visit the Isle again.

Shanklin and Sandown are beautiful beaches but both towns...
Shanklin and Sandown are beautiful beaches but both towns are dying. Shops empty etc. Parking expensive and a nightmare to find which took a lot of the enjoyment out of the trip. Parking charged 24 hours 7 days a week.
A delightful atmosphere in a grand old stone house with superb sloping terraced garden, beautifully landscaped. Its location in Shanklin Old village, close to the sea and The Chine could not be better. Our room overlooking the garden was a good size and very comfortable. Breakfasts were excellent, superbly cooked and the staff most helpful and welcoming. The added gesture of prosecco for birthdays was a lovely touch.
Lots of potential but in great need of renovation. Pool was out of use. Decor is old and tired. There was a hole in our floor in the room, covered with carpet! Everything is done on a shoestring !
Despite the poor accommodation, the staff are lovely and the location is close to the beach and shanklin town.
It's a shame the owner does not invest in this hotel because it could draw higher prices and better reviews!
Joan and Chris are exceptional hosts and are always on hand. We were offered tea and biscuits on arrival which we found very welcoming.
Hayes Barton is wonderful, spotlessly clean, comfy beds and in a peaceful area near Shanklin Old Village. The breakfasts are varied and delicious with lots of choice.
We would thoroughly recommend
Writing as part of the party travelling (daughter!) ... Great location - walking distance of Shanklin beach, chine and old village - large and clean room, free parking, nice breakfast, free games to play of an evening and a nice bar area overlooking the sea, friendly and accommodating staff, nice outside space (if weather allows)
St George's house was an excellent hotel. We really enjoyed our stay. The hosts, Mark and Pearly were very welcoming - extremely nice people. Breakfasts, cooked to order, were brilliant. It was such a treat to enjoy fresh fruit salad each morning. the hotel itself is conveniently located close the the old village and the beach.
Staff were warm, engaging and helpful, sea views and room fantastic, hotel a ‘beacon’ on the IoW for having a modern and functional EV 7kw car charger, great choice of food for breakfasts in the restaurant and the building itself has great space and style and is well maintained while keeping its period feel.
The owner and her son were extremely kind and helpful. The position of the hotel was, as expected, excellent. We asked for a sea view, and the owner was kind enough to move us down from the second floor to the first floor when we asked, and she gave us a room with a magnificent view of Culver Cliff.
Very Friendly and welcoming staff who managed Covid safety excellently. Brilliant room with sea views on both sides, the hotel is a short walk from Shanklin Old town and sea front. Great food and one of the waiters Andy deserves a special mention for his amazing customer service.
Lovely hotel very friendly & staff very attentive. Nothing is too much trouble. The evening meal I had in the bar was delicious and in the morning an excellent full English breakfast. Definitely recommend and return soon.
I would recommend 11 out of 10 🙂🙂
Very nice view! Short walk to the beach, Shanklin Chine, old village, places to eat and shops. Staff was friendly, helpful, tentative & accommodating. Good breakfast. Free onsite parking. Pet friendly. Indoor swimming pool. Overall, it was a good stay.
Lovely hotel overlooking the sea and within walking distance to Shanklin old village and to the esplanade. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Plenty of activities for the family to enjoy all within close reach of the hotel.
David is so friendly and helpful - had such lovely conversations with him about IOW and about life in general. He's a chef so the food was excellent! Very convenient for both the town and the beach.
The location was very good, all local attractions were within easy reach. The hotel has lovely common areas and the terrace. Breakfast service was good and hosts were welcoming.
